Behaviour Detection is an increasingly discussed topic and not only in the field of safeguarding civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference. Observing people, having a conversation, asking the right questions, evaluating body language and facial expressions all play a part in determining whether someone is hiding their emotion or not telling the truth. So how can you tell the difference between what is normal behaviour and what constitutes suspicious behaviour? Can you identify if someone is just a nervous flyer or if they have ill intentions? And who should evaluate passengers – personnel or modern technology?
On the 22nd of September 2015 AVSEC & Emergency Training presented in Prague the first Workshop on Behaviour Detection. Representatives from seven European countries plus Jordan, attended and discussed solutions on how to tackle the above questions. The workshop also discussed the best type of candidates to recruit and what skills, knowledge and experience one should hold.
